The Parkway East’s newly installed Commercial Street Bridge will reopen Monday evening, more than a week ahead of schedule, PennDOT and the governor’s office announced Sunday afternoon.
Gov. Josh Shapiro, Lt. Gov. Austin Davis, Pittsburgh Mayor Corey O’Connor and PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll will visit the site Monday afternoon. The exact time of the reopening Monday evening will be announced by officials at that event, PennDOT said.
The new bridge, which was moved into place last week using a greased rail system and dozens of hydraulic jacks, replaces the old bridge that was imploded July 16 in a controlled demolition.
The old bridge was 75 years old. Crews began constructing the new one in late 2024 adjacent to the original one.
The span carries the Parkway East over Commercial Street near Pittsburgh’s Frick Park.
The Parkway closure began on the night of July 10 and was originally scheduled to last until the morning of Aug. 3. But officials announced last week that they expected the bridge to reopen sooner than that.
The expedited timeline was based on what PennDOT District 11 Executive Jason Zang said was a “wildly successful” operation sliding the new bridge into place. It was originally expected to take between 25 and 30 hours but was completed in just seven, he said.
